Chapter 4

Soriyah

I wake in the small hours of the morning. Kaleb’s lying on his stomach, head turned toward me, one arm a solid weight across my belly. His face is smoothed out by sleep, untroubled and somehow younger. I watch the way moonlight touches him, brushing his skin with an iridescent glow.

He’s beautiful.

We finally got around to our shawarmas yesterday, reheating them in the oven and eating naked at the kitchen counter, licking our fingers as rich, tangy sauce dripped down them. We talked. About the boys when they were babies, about my music, about my dreams for my career. He told me about his mother, his brothers, about the tech company they built together as young men, barely out of their teens, and the data processing software they’d sold for enough to invest in the business and make them comfortable. I glance around his spacious loft bedroom now and wonder now just what “comfortable” means to him.

I shift against the soft sheets, remembering making love again on his couch. My legs ache a bit from straddling him, and I smile drowsily as I move them slightly. It isn’t just from that time, I remind myself.

After my performance at a small bar venue not far from here, I had called Sabrina to let her know I was staying the night with Kaleb. Her cheers were so loud Kaleb could hear them from the other side of the car, and we both laughed. It had been late when we got in, but we hadn’t gotten any sleep at all for a couple of hours yet. I remember this satiated, sexy feeling from the time we spent together in Vegas.

Gently, I slide out from under his arm, careful not to wake him. It’s early yet, but my internal alarm clock is telling me it’s time to wake up, get the boys their breakfast, start in on the never ending list of tasks each day brings.

I walk softly down the stairs to the kitchen and poke around until I find the coffee and filters. It amuses me that with all the high-tech sophistication in the apartment around me, Kaleb is still rocking a plain ol’ 12 cup Mr. Coffee. His coffee, on the other hand, is top notch. I breathe in the strong scent as it starts to perk and head to the bathroom to grab a shower.
